Reverse Percentage Calculator

Find the original number before a percentage was applied, given the result and the percentage.

About the Reverse % Calculator

If you know a percentage was applied and you know the result, but you need to find the original number it started from, this reverse percentage calculator does exactly that — a common need when working backward from a discounted price, a tax-inclusive total, or a reported statistic.

How It Works

The calculator divides the resulting value by the percentage, expressed as a decimal, to recover the original number that the percentage was taken from.

Original Number = Resulting Value / (Percent / 100).

Example

Scenario: A resulting value of 45, which represents 30% of an unknown original number.

Result: The original number is 150.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Assumes the resulting value represents exactly the stated percentage of the original number, with no other adjustments involved.
  • This calculates 'what number gives this result when X% of it is taken', which is a different question from removing an added tax or discount — use the VAT or Discount calculators for those specific price scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from removing VAT from a price?
Removing VAT accounts for a percentage added on top of a base price (Gross = Net × (1+rate)); this calculator instead answers 'this number is X% of what original number', which is Result / (Percent/100) — check which relationship matches your situation.
What if the percentage is small, like 1%?
Dividing by a small decimal like 0.01 produces a large original number, since the resulting value represents only a tiny fraction of the original.
Can I verify the answer?
Yes — take the calculated original number, multiply it by the percentage as a decimal, and it should equal the resulting value you started with.
