About the Rounding Calculator
Rounding trims a number to a manageable number of decimal places, and the direction you round matters for things like billing, measurements, and reporting. This calculator supports rounding to the nearest value, always rounding up, or always rounding down, to any number of decimal places.
How It Works
The calculator multiplies the number by 10 raised to the power of the decimal places you want, applies the chosen rounding function (nearest, ceiling for always-up, or floor for always-down), then divides back down to restore the correct decimal position.
Rounded = round_mode(Number × 10^places) / 10^places, where round_mode is nearest, ceiling (up), or floor (down).
Example
Scenario: Rounding 3.14159 to 2 decimal places, rounding to nearest.
Result: 3.14.
Assumptions & Limitations
- 'Round to nearest' uses standard rounding, where a value exactly halfway rounds to the nearest even increment as is typical in most calculators.
- Decimal places of 0 rounds to the nearest whole number.
- Negative decimal places (rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, etc.) are not supported in this version — enter the number pre-scaled if needed.
