About the Tip Calculator
Figuring out a fair tip at the table, especially when splitting a bill between friends, is one of the most common quick calculations people need. This calculator computes the tip amount, the total bill including tip, and — if you're splitting the check — exactly how much each person owes.
How It Works
The calculator multiplies the bill amount by the tip percentage to find the tip owed, adds that to the bill for the total, and if you specify more than one person, divides the total evenly across everyone splitting it.
Tip = Bill × Tip%; Total = Bill + Tip; Per Person = Total / Number of People.
Worked example
Scenario: A $64.50 restaurant bill with an 18% tip.
- Tip: $64.50 × 18% = $11.61.
- Total: $64.50 + $11.61 = $76.11.
- Split between 3 people: $76.11 ÷ 3 = $25.37 each.
Result: An $11.61 tip and a $76.11 total ($25.37 each for three people).
Tips and common mistakes
- Many diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal; enter that amount if you prefer.
- Quick check: 10% is $6.45, so 20% is $12.90 and 18% is a little less.
- Tipping customs vary widely by country — in some places service is already included.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Assumes an even split across all people, not weighted by who ordered what.
- Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount by default — some diners prefer to tip on the post-tax total instead, in which case enter the after-tax amount as the bill.
- Does not handle uneven splits where different people order different amounts — for that, calculate each person's share of the bill first, then apply the tip percentage to each share.
Tip customs vary by place and service
A tip calculator handles the arithmetic, but it cannot decide what percentage is appropriate. Tipping expectations vary by country, venue, service type and whether a service charge is already included. Check the bill before adding an additional tip.
When splitting a tipped bill evenly, calculate the total including tip first and then divide by the number of people. For uneven orders, split each person’s share before applying the agreed tip method.
