Tip Calculator

Calculate the tip amount, total bill, and per-person cost for any bill amount and tip percentage.

About the Tip Calculator

Figuring out a fair tip at the table, especially when splitting a bill between friends, is one of the most common quick calculations people need. This calculator computes the tip amount, the total bill including tip, and — if you're splitting the check — exactly how much each person owes.

How It Works

The calculator multiplies the bill amount by the tip percentage to find the tip owed, adds that to the bill for the total, and if you specify more than one person, divides the total evenly across everyone splitting it.

Tip = Bill × Tip%; Total = Bill + Tip; Per Person = Total / Number of People.

Example

Scenario: A $64.50 bill with an 18% tip, split between 3 people.

Result: Tip of $11.61, total bill of $76.11, and $25.37 per person.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Assumes an even split across all people, not weighted by who ordered what.
  • Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount by default — some diners prefer to tip on the post-tax total instead, in which case enter the after-tax amount as the bill.
  • Does not handle uneven splits where different people order different amounts — for that, calculate each person's share of the bill first, then apply the tip percentage to each share.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Common etiquette in most places is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the post-tax total is also widely accepted and only adds a small amount more — enter whichever bill amount matches your preference.
What is a standard tip percentage?
Standard tipping norms vary by country and type of service — many US diners tip 15-20% at full-service restaurants, while norms differ significantly in other regions, so use whatever percentage fits your local custom.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Calculate each person's individual portion of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each person's portion separately rather than splitting the total evenly.
