About the GPA Calculator
GPA weighs each course's letter grade by how many credit hours it is worth, so a high grade in a 4-credit course counts for more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. This calculator computes your overall GPA from any list of letter grades and their credit hours on the standard 4.0 scale.
How It Works
The calculator converts each letter grade to its standard grade-point value (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0.0), multiplies each by that course's credit hours to get quality points, sums all the quality points, and divides by the total credit hours to get GPA.
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits), using the standard 4.0 scale.
Example
Scenario: Courses of A (3 credits), B+ (4 credits), A- (3 credits), and B (2 credits).
Result: A GPA calculated by weighting each grade's point value by its credit hours and dividing by total credits.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Uses the standard US 4.0 grade point scale (A=4.0 down to F=0.0 with +/- adjustments), though some schools use slightly different scales.
- Each line should list a letter grade and credit hours separated by a comma.
- Does not account for schools using a 5.0 scale for honors/AP courses, plus/minus grading variations, or pass/fail courses, which some institutions handle differently.
