Discount Calculator

Calculate the final sale price and amount saved after applying a percentage discount.

About the Discount Calculator

A percentage discount is easy to state but easy to miscalculate under pressure at checkout — this calculator removes the guesswork, instantly showing the final sale price and exactly how much you save on any original price and discount percentage.

How It Works

The calculator multiplies the original price by the discount percentage to find the amount saved, then subtracts that from the original price to get the final price you actually pay.

Amount Saved = Original Price × Discount %; Final Price = Original Price − Amount Saved.

Example

Scenario: A $75 item with a 25% discount.

Result: You save $18.75, for a final price of $56.25.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Assumes a single discount percentage applied to the full original price.
  • Discount is applied before any sales tax, which is calculated separately in most jurisdictions.
  • Does not stack multiple discounts automatically — apply them one at a time in sequence for stacked promotions.
  • Does not account for store-specific rules like maximum discount caps on clearance items.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate two stacked discounts, like 20% off then an extra 10% off?
Apply them sequentially rather than adding the percentages — take 20% off first, then apply the second 10% discount to the already-reduced price, which results in less total savings than a flat 30% off.
How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price and discount?
Use the Reverse Percentage Calculator, which works backward from a discounted result to recover the original price.
Does the discount apply before or after tax?
Discounts are almost always applied to the pre-tax price first, with sales tax then calculated on the discounted amount, not the original price.
