About the Mulch Calculator

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard in bulk or by the bag for smaller projects, and getting the depth right — typically 2 to 4 inches for most garden beds — matters for weed suppression and moisture retention. This calculator converts your bed dimensions and desired depth into the volume needed.

How It Works

The calculator multiplies bed length by width by depth (converted from inches to feet) to get cubic feet, then divides by 27 to convert to cubic yards, the standard bulk mulch unit. It also converts that figure into a count of standard 2-cubic-foot bags for smaller purchases.

Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth(in)/12) / 27; Bags (2 cu ft each) = Cubic Feet / 2.

Worked example

Scenario: A 20 ft × 5 ft garden bed covered 3 inches deep.

1. Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
2. Volume: 20 × 5 × 0.25 = 25 cubic feet.
3. Cubic yards: 25 ÷ 27 = 0.93 cu yd.
4. 2 cu ft bags: 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5 → 13 bags.

Result: 0.93 cubic yards, or 13 two-cubic-foot bags.

Tips and common mistakes

• 2–3 inches is typical for beds; 3–4 inches for weed suppression on paths.
• Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
• Bulk delivery is usually cheaper than bags above about 2 cubic yards.

Assumptions & Limitations

• Assumes a consistent, level mulch depth across the entire bed area.
• Bag size assumption of 2 cubic feet is standard for most retail mulch bags, though some brands package differently.

• Irregularly shaped beds should be broken into simpler rectangular sections and totaled for the most accurate volume estimate.

Choosing a practical mulch depth

Mulch quantity depends heavily on depth. A light refresh over an existing bed needs less material than a new installation. Avoid piling mulch directly against tree trunks or plant stems, and account for beds that contain large rocks, dense shrubs or other areas that will not be covered. Bulk mulch is commonly sold by volume, so round the result to the supplier’s available increment.
