Water Intake Calculator

Estimate your daily recommended water intake based on body weight, activity level, and climate.

About the Water Intake Calculator

Hydration needs scale with body size, activity, and climate, not a single fixed number of glasses per day — this calculator gives a personalized daily water intake estimate accounting for your body weight, how much you exercise, and whether you live or are active in a hot climate.

How It Works

The calculator starts from a baseline of about 33 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight, adds extra water for exercise minutes based on typical sweat loss rates, and applies a further increase for hot or humid climates where fluid loss is higher.

Base = Weight(kg) × 0.033 L; + Exercise Minutes / 30 × 0.35 L; × 1.15 if hot/humid climate.

Example

Scenario: A 70 kg person exercising 30 minutes daily in a normal climate.

Result: A recommended daily water intake of roughly 2.66 liters.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Uses a commonly cited baseline of about 33 ml per kilogram of body weight for general hydration needs.
  • Assumes exercise increases fluid needs roughly linearly with duration, which is a simplification of actual sweat rate, which varies by intensity and individual.
  • Total water needs also come from food and other beverages, not drinking water alone — this estimate is a general guide, not a medical prescription.
  • Certain medical conditions affect fluid needs and require guidance from a healthcare provider rather than a general calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include water from food?
No — this estimate focuses on fluid intake specifically; food (especially fruits and vegetables) also contributes meaningfully to total daily hydration, so actual drinking water needs may be somewhat lower than the total shown.
Is the 'eight glasses a day' rule accurate?
Eight glasses a day is a rough, one-size-fits-all rule of thumb — actual needs vary significantly by body size, activity level, and climate, which is why a weight-based estimate like this one is generally more personalized.
How much more water do I need in hot weather?
This calculator applies roughly a 15% increase for hot or humid conditions, reflecting the higher fluid loss through sweat that occurs in warmer environments.
