Bill Split Calculator
Split a restaurant or group bill evenly among any number of people, including tip.
About the Bill Split Calculator
Splitting a group bill evenly, with tip included, is the most common way friends settle a shared meal or outing. This calculator takes the total bill, an optional tip percentage, and the number of people, and returns exactly how much each person should pay.
How It Works
The calculator first adds the tip percentage on top of the bill amount to get the grand total, then divides that total evenly by the number of people splitting it.
Total = Bill × (1 + Tip%); Per Person = Total / Number of People.
Example
Scenario: A $120 bill with a 15% tip, split between 4 people.
Result: Total with tip of $138, or $34.50 per person.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Assumes every person pays an exactly equal share, regardless of what they individually ordered.
- Tip is applied to the full bill before dividing, not calculated separately per person.
- For itemized splitting where people pay based on what they ordered, calculate each person's subtotal separately, then apply the tip percentage to each.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this different from the Tip Calculator?
They share the same underlying math, but this calculator is framed specifically around splitting a group total evenly, while the Tip Calculator focuses more on the tip amount itself for a single bill.
What if one person wants to pay for an extra item?
Subtract that person's extra item cost (plus its share of tip) from the group total before splitting the remainder evenly, then add the extra amount back for that individual.
Can I round up the per-person amount for convenience?
Yes — many groups round each person's share up to the nearest dollar for simplicity, with the small rounding difference typically absorbed by whoever is paying the bill.
