About the Bill Split Calculator
Splitting a group bill evenly, with tip included, is the most common way friends settle a shared meal or outing. This calculator takes the total bill, an optional tip percentage, and the number of people, and returns exactly how much each person should pay.
How It Works
The calculator first adds the tip percentage on top of the bill amount to get the grand total, then divides that total evenly by the number of people splitting it.
Total = Bill × (1 + Tip%); Per Person = Total / Number of People.
Worked example
Scenario: A $120 bill for 4 people with a 15% tip.
- Tip: $120 × 15% = $18.
- Total with tip: $120 + $18 = $138.
- Per person: $138 ÷ 4 = $34.50.
Result: $34.50 each.
Tips and common mistakes
- If shares don't divide evenly to the cent, someone pays a cent or two more.
- For uneven orders, total each person's items first and use the Tip Calculator on each subtotal.
- Leave the tip blank for bills where service is included.

- Assumes every person pays an exactly equal share, regardless of what they individually ordered.
- Tip is applied to the full bill before dividing, not calculated separately per person.
- For itemized splitting where people pay based on what they ordered, calculate each person's subtotal separately, then apply the tip percentage to each.
Splitting a bill fairly
An equal split works when everyone is sharing roughly the same amount. If orders differ significantly, calculate each person’s food and drink subtotal first, allocate shared items, then apply tax, service charges and tip consistently. This avoids making a simple equal split look more precise than it really is.
Example: if a $120 total including tip is shared equally by 4 people, each person pays $30. For an uneven split, calculate each person’s share before dividing.
