Percentage Difference Calculator

Calculate the percentage difference between two values with no fixed 'before' value.

About the % Difference Calculator

Percentage difference is used when comparing two values that are equally valid — neither one is clearly the "before" and the other the "after" — such as comparing two competing products or two survey results. It always returns a positive number describing how far apart they are relative to their average.

How It Works

The calculator finds the absolute difference between the two values, then divides that difference by the average of the two values, and expresses the result as a percentage.

Percentage Difference (%) = |A − B| / ((A + B) / 2) × 100.

Example

Scenario: Comparing 40 and 50 with no clear 'before' value.

Result: A percentage difference of about 22.2%.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Assumes both values are meant to be compared symmetrically, with neither treated as the baseline.
  • The result is always non-negative since it measures the size of the gap, not its direction.
  • If you have a clear original value and a resulting value (like a price before and after a change), use the Percentage Change Calculator instead, since it correctly signs the result as an increase or decrease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is percentage difference always positive?
Because it measures the magnitude of the gap between two values relative to their average, not which one came first, so direction is not part of the calculation.
When should I use percentage difference instead of percentage change?
Use percentage difference when comparing two independent values with no natural order, such as two competitors' prices; use percentage change when one value is clearly the starting point and the other is the result after a change.
What if both values are equal?
If A and B are exactly equal, the percentage difference is 0%, since there is no gap between them.
