Hours and Minutes Calculator
Convert between decimal hours and hours-and-minutes format in either direction.
About the Hrs & Mins Calculator
Payroll systems, spreadsheets, and time-tracking software often need decimal hours (like 2.75), while people naturally think in hours and minutes (like 2 hours 45 minutes) — this calculator converts cleanly between the two formats in either direction.
How It Works
Converting to decimal, the calculator divides the minutes by 60 and adds that fraction to the whole hours. Converting from decimal, it takes the whole-number part as hours and multiplies the remaining fraction by 60 to get the minutes, rounding to the nearest whole minute.
Decimal Hours = Hours + Minutes/60. Hours & Minutes = floor(Decimal), round((Decimal − floor(Decimal)) × 60) minutes.
Example
Scenario: Converting 2 hours 45 minutes to decimal.
Result: 2.75 decimal hours.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Assumes minutes are entered as a value between 0 and 59 when converting to decimal.
- Rounds minutes to the nearest whole minute when converting from decimal hours.
- Very small rounding differences can appear when converting back and forth repeatedly due to standard floating-point rounding.
