About the Hours Calculator
Figuring out how much time passed between two clock times — a shift, a flight, a meeting block — is easy to get wrong when it crosses midnight. This calculator gives you the exact duration in decimal hours and in a clean hours-and-minutes format.
How It Works
The calculator converts both times to minutes since midnight, subtracts the start from the end, and if the result is negative (meaning the end time is on the next day) adds 24 hours worth of minutes to correct it, then converts the total back into hours and minutes.
Total Minutes = (End Time − Start Time + 1440) mod 1440; Total Hours = Total Minutes / 60.
Example
Scenario: A start time of 9:00 AM and an end time of 5:30 PM.
Result: A total of 8.5 hours, shown as 8h 30m.
Assumptions & Limitations
- Assumes the end time falls on the same day as the start time, or the very next day if the end time appears earlier than the start time.
- Does not require you to specify AM/PM separately from a 24-hour input if your device time field defaults to 24-hour format.
- For spans longer than 24 hours, use the Date Difference Calculator combined with this tool, since a single day's start/end time pair can only represent up to 24 hours.
